The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming surgery. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions. We can be reached at (205) 823-3461 during regular business hours.
You will receive your post-operative prescriptions following your procedure. Please begin taking any prescriptions we prescribe immediately following surgery with food.
It is important to stop taking aspirin 5 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, remember to discontinue them as directed by your physician. If you take antibiotic pre-med, please take it as directed before your surgery.
You may bring your iPod or MP3 player to listen to during your procedure.
For patients being IV sedated, please do not eat or drink 5 hours prior to your surgical appointment unless you are diabetic. Discuss any meds you normally take with our office to determine when they should be taken, or what surgical time will work best for you. Please wear a short sleeved shirt and ladies should not wear make-up below the eyes. An adult driver must accompany you to your procedure and if the procedure is shorter than 1.5 hours in duration, your driver must remain at our office. If a longer procedure, they are required to return 30 minutes prior to the conclusion of the procedure for exiting instructions. As we are required to stay with you while under the effects of sedation your driver must be present when instructed.
In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we will see you for post-operative checks during the first 1-6 weeks. Normally you return 7-14 days from your surgical appointment. If you do not have a return visit, please call our office to make one. In most cases, after surgery we will also look forward to seeing you back for a periodontal maintenance cleaning and an examination of tissue maturation about 10-12 weeks following the surgery.
Please alert the office to any allergies or sensitivities that you might have to antibiotics. You will be prescribed an antibiotic if our doctor determines it to be necessary. Take as directed until gone. It is advisable not to take these medications on an empty stomach, as nausea may result. For women taking birth control pills, be advised that antibiotics may interfere with their effectiveness.
If you elect to use one of the following oral sedatives you must have a ride to and from the office. Please bring your remaining tablet(s) with you. Remember, we encourage you to eat lightly prior to your surgery.
